Let me
share with you how my beloved Smokey (the cat) came into my life.
I had just walked in the house and my phone was ringing. It was my
sister-in-law telling me there was a little kitten outside her
window that was just crying and she didn't know what to do.
At the time I lived around the corner so I ran over there and sure
enough here was this little, I mean little kitten just meowing away.
He came right up to me and when I sat down on a chair he jumped
right on my lap. He was so mangy (sp?) and skinny.
I took him home and because I had another cat, I put him in my
basement while I called my vet. You never know when you find a wild
cat what it has, even in a kitten.
The vet couldn't take him until the next day. So poor kitty had to
stay in the basement all night... an my old cat Willie wasn't too
pleased to have another cat in the house.
I actually got a pretty bad bit from Smokey and had to go through
rabies shots... but that's another story.
So I take Smokey (he got his name because he was gray with a little
black) to the Vet and poor thing is very sickly. He had worms and
some kind of blood disease that required him to have hourly shots.
He was so tiny, suffering from malnutrition and near death... but he
was so loveable.
The vet was just wonderful. The stuff Smokey needed was very
expensive and she told me, she would only charge me the bare
minimums. Her reasoning if I was willing to take this cat in the
least she could do was not make any money.
Smokey spent the first month in and out of the Animal Hospital. And
the weirdest thing and the vet said she's never seen it, is that his
color changed. He went from gray to brown! His hair just completely
shed off and came back another color.
Anyway, I've had Smokey for four years now and about 2 years after I
got him, my beloved cat Willie who I had for 15 years died.
I can't explain it but Smokey
started to take on some of Willie's personality after Willie left
and he helped me get through the loss of Willie.
Smokey is the 4th cat I've had and I've never had one that was more
affectionate and appreciative.
And the once little cat... is
big... he now is almost 17 pounds and he's not fat. I sometimes
wonder if he isn't part bobcat... he sure looks it!
